What You Should Know Before Traveling to Hong Kong

Hong Kong is the SAR (Special Administrative Region) of China. This means that there is some difference between traveling to Hong Kong and China. It is good to know them before you travel. The name, Hong Kong means Fragrant Harbour. It has the population of 7.071.576 people. But, the size is just 1.092 km2, so you will see a lot of people. Also, you should know that there are citizens of all foreign countries in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong has a separate immigration system from China. You should know that you cannot use the save visa for Hong Kong and China. You must apply for a visa at China’s embassy or at the Hong Kong Immigration Department. Even Chinese citizens must apply for a visa. However, if they are just passing through Hong Kong, they have visa-free period that last 7 days. If you stay longer than allowed by your visa, you can pay $50.000 and spend three years in prison. If you work or study, without appropriate visa, you can pay $50.000 and spend two years in prison.
You can travel to Hong Kong by a plane. The Hong Kong International Airport is one of the best in the world. You also travel by ferry, helicopter, by train and even by bicycle.
The official languages in Hong Kong are Chinese and English. Because it was the British colony, the English language is widely used. Young people understand English well. However, if you know Chinese, you should know that Hong Kong uses Cantonese language.
The official currency is the Hong Kong dollar. ATMs are common in urban areas. They accept VISA and MasterCard.
