Mummies Found in Newly-Found Ancient Egyptian Tomb near Luxor

Egypt archaeologists are excited over their discovery. They found a royal goldsmith's tomb that has the portrait of a woman with her two children. The tomb that was found at the Draa Abul Naga Necropolis also has mummies, pots, and sarcophagi, and statuettes. Several skulls were also found inside the mausoleum. The Egyptian authorities stated that the tomb was found close to the Nile city of Luxor, 700 kilometers south of Cairo. It dates back to the original kingdom of 16th to 11th Centuries BC.  Another piece found inside was a goldsmith statue of Amenemhat, meaning ‘the god', his wife and son. The tomb has been dated as being 3500 years old.

On the day this news was announced, CNN was the first media channel to be allowed into the tomb to record information. The Ministry Archaeology of Egypt said that they established the mummies behind a burial tunnel that led off the central hall. It is uncertain as to whether the three bodies found relates to Amenemhat. Mostafa Al-Waziri led the Egyptian group that found the tomb. He says that, according to Ancient Egyptian beliefs and culture, Amenemhat is the man of the house and Amenhotep is his wife, the woman of the house.

An entry revealed an opening to another tomb. It led to another compartment that pictures Amenemhat with his wife in a particular position. The image, which was partially destroyed, is in the form of a sandstone statue. In between their legs is a small statue of their son. Mostafa-Al-Waziri says that the position where Amenemhat's son's image is located is where daughters usually are placed. They typically refer to girls as, ‘precious.' He continues to say that if a family does not have daughters, they would place a daughter-in-law in that position. It is strange to find a son placed in-between parents’ legs. Waziri says that this specific unearthing will lead to more future discoveries.
