Whether you are a not-so-easily-impressed explorer, a world traveler, or a tourist looking for wilderness, Choquequirao Archaeological Park in Peru is a must if you plan to visit South America. You will be mesmerized at its extravagant beauty. This is a place where nature and archaeological design merge to provide a peaceful view and a pleasant experience.

First, you need to know that this Incan site is located in South Peru. The archaeological area is very similar to Machu Pichu and is located in the Willkapampa mountain range. The entire complex covers approximately 1,800 hectares, from which only about 40% has been excavated.

Choquequirao is a settlement that saw its greatest days during the 15th and 16th centuries and is attributed to Tawantisuyu, which is the Quechua name of the Inca Empire. Its construction was done by the Inca Pachacútec's heirs, Tupac Yupanqui or Huayna Cápac Its elevation is at 3,050 meters above sea level on the mountain range located on the districts of Cuzco and Apurímac.

The Inca architecture is impressive, with great plazas, chambers, and other amazing features.  The types of construction found suggest that the place was probably built as a place for religious and public ceremonies. You can find examples of a cult worshipping the sun god, water god, and the earth god, among others.

Choquequirao has a rich and abundant flora and fauna. It has been declared a Regional Conservation Area by the National System of State-Protected Areas (NSSPA).  Temperatures during the day range from 19 to 22 degrees Celsius (66 and 72F).  Nighttime gets even chillier, between 8 and 12 degrees Celsius (56 and 54F).

The only access is by foot or on a mule that you can rent from the locals who will sometimes act as guides. But first you need to drive from Cuzco towards Abancay all the way through the exit to Cachorra, in the province of Apurímac.

The Inca Empire is on display and shows its splendor from the past and has many stories to share with you. Make Choquequirao your next stop in Peru; you are in for a quite exquisite treat.
