Unusual vacation package at Las Pozas, Xilitla, Mexico

If you want to have a surreal vacation then Las Pozas, Xilitla, Mexico is it. A small town in the state of San Luis Potosi, Las Pozas is a surreal garden created by Edward James. He is widely known as “an eccentric English poet”.

James went to Mexico in 1947. His main source of wealth was from owning a coffee plantation. He was born in an upper-class English family. He collected surreal art first and then encouraged the Surrealist Movement with his support for artists like Dali and Magritte.

Started in 1962, James’ surreal little garden is now the centre of an unusual vacation. The property has 9 pools and the whole garden has over 30 unusual structures co-created by architect Plutarco Gastelum who was also a friend of James.

The garden cost millions of dollars to build and some structures are not even finished. Some experts question whether those structures were even meant to “be finished”.

It’s easy to get to Las Pozas, Xilitla, Mexico. First, you take a flight into Tampico, rent a car to drive from San Miguel de Allende to reach Xilitla by road.

A vacationer on TripAdvisor says, “ Inside you will see different sculptors, flowers, towers, two main waterfalls, natural pools, part of his house, public restroom (clean), one restaurant, and gift shop. You can bring a small bag of water and snacks. Wear comfortable shoes and bring bug spray. This is not handicap recommended or an attraction for small children’s (you have to walk a lot).”

The garden is open to the public from 9 am to 6 pm. It may take you three hours for the whole tour of the surrealist garden but it is an unusual vacation package you don't want to miss!
