JetBlue flies Parkland shooting victims to Florida for free

On Wednesday, Feb 14, the suburban town of Parkland, Florida experienced one of the worst school shootings in modern history. Seventeen people - mostly children - were shot to death by a lone gunman who entered the campus and started shooting.

The small community from south Florida has been receiving thoughts and prayers from all over the country as they try to recover from this tragedy that will forever be in their minds.  JetBlue Air wanted to honor the victims by offering free flights for relatives to travel to South Florida, for free.

On Saturday, three days after the shooting, JetBlue airline posted:

“We are deeply saddened by the news of Wednesday’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, and our hearts go out to the victims and their loved ones."

“This week’s events are felt by all of our 21,000 crew members, many of whom live in, work from and travel through the Broward County area, home to our focus city, Fort Lauderdale. We want to do our part to help the community, and support South Florida through this difficult time.”

JetBlue with headquarters in Long Island City, New York, said they have volunteers in its Family Assistance Center to book free flights for the relatives of the victims of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.

The airliner has a corporate office in Orlando and they also provided ground transportation through a partnership with the ridesharing company Lyft.

On Wednesday, February 14, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, entered the Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, armed with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and shot 17 teachers and students.  The shooting, one of the worst the country has experienced opened the debate on gun control once again.
