Haohan Qiao in China’s Hunan province

The bridge, called Brave Men´s Bridge in English, really gives honor to its name. The 430-meter long (984 ft) bridge allows its walkers an exciting view of the 180 meter (590 ft) high chasm above which it hangs. It is located in the Shinuizhai Geological Park in China´s Hunan province. The bridge opened in September, 2015 and was the first of a series of glass bridges in China and the world.

The glass panels are sturdier than regular glass. The thickness of each panel is 24 millimeters and it is 25 times stronger than regular glass. The bridge was first made of wood until a team of eleven engineers replaced the wood with the glass.

The bridge is in itself terrifying. Just imagine standing on glass at a height of 590 ft! When it first opened, it became a great attraction. Some walkers who first used the glass were not so brave and crawled on all fours instead of walking. The builders of the bridge ensured that the bridge was sturdy enough, "The bridge we build will stand firm even if tourists are jumping on it. The steel frame used to support and encase the glass bridge is also very strong and densely built, so even if a glass is broken, travelers won't fall through."

It all began in 2014, when builders started to replace the wooden structures of the bridge with glass. It concluded in September of the next year when builders continued to replace the whole structure with glass. Interestingly, the bridge connects two peaks in the Hunan Province region thought to have inspired the movie Avatar.

However, the record of the largest glass bridge in the world was not held for too long. This year, China inaugurated the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge which is 430 meters long and almost 305 meters above the ground.
