What You Should Know Before Traveling To Latvia

Latvia is one of three Baltic countries. It is located on the coast of the Baltic Sea. It is surrounded by Russia, Belarus, Lithuania and Estonia. The size of Latvia is 64,589 sq. km. It has 2.223.000 citizens. The capital is Riga, which is the most popular tourist spot in this country. The country code is +371. The best time to visit this country is from June to September. During this period, there is a lot of local food and the weather is warm. January and February are very cold months.
Latvia is a member of the Schengen Agreement. This means that citizens of countries that are member of this agreement don’t need a visa. Citizens from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Croatia, Bulgarian and Romania doesn’t fall in this category.  Citizens from Australia, the US, Canada and New Zealand, don’t need a visa.
You can go to Latvia by plane. The only airport is the Riga International Airport. You can get by a bus. There are direct connections between Riga and Russia (Moscow and Sankt Petersburg). You will use SJSC Latvian Railways. You can also get in Latvia by a car or a boat.
The official language is Latvian. It has very complicated grammar and it is very different from English. 70% of the population speaks Russian language. Also, a lot of young people understand English.
The official currency is the euro. There are a lot of banks and ATMs in Riga and smaller cities. Many banks will accept traveler’s cheques with a fee of 1%. Things you should buy are: Amber, smoked ceramics, silver jewelry and black bread.
