Traveling Into Mystras Is Like Holding Hands With Time In The Byzantine Period

Mystras is one of the most popular and probably the best site of historical significance that the Pelopponnese can provide to the world of travel. Geographically, Mystras is located at the base of Mount Tagetos.

It served as the political capital of Pelopponnese at a time in history.  There are no explanations for the ancient name of Mystras, Myzithras. All that can be said is that it means 'cheese maker'. In the modern times, the area is synonymous with processing of citrus fruits and olives.

The city of Mystras was held by the Ottomans between 1460 and 1821. There are still ruins reminding of the days when the Ottomans ruled over Italy.

Mystras occupies a significant part in everyday life too considering the initiative taken by the Peloponnesians when it came to existence in the 13th century. The city had a population of about 25,000 at that time.

It assumed significance for the Byzantine empire since the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Mystras became the capital of the empire. The city changed hands with the Venetians and Morosinis alternatively after that.

The silk industry prospered and developed in the city of Mystras. The natives of the area have assumed a dominant status in terms of political and social set up in Greece.

Mystras is one of the most beautiful and wonderful places that can ever be on your itinerary. Walking around the city with its castles and experiencing the shattering silence of the city's grandeur is an experience you are going to cherish for the rest of your life.
